Chemotherapy is the administration of cancer-fighting medication (cytotoxic drugs) to destroy cancer cells. There are several chemotherapy drugs that can be used to treat cervical cancer, the most common being cisplatin, which is often given in combination with radiotherapy or alongside other chemotherapy drugs. The drugs are usually given intravenously (injection through a vein).

Early-stage and locally advanced cervical cancer

Chemotherapy can be used to treat tumors located in the cervix or those that have spread locally. It is often combined with radiotherapy to increase treatment effectiveness.

Advanced-stage cancer

Chemotherapy can also be given to women whose cancer has spread to other parts of the body. In this case it is used to try to reduce and control the cancer, relieve symptoms, and prolong quality of life for patients. These aims are reached in some cases, though unfortunately in some patients the cancer is not controlled and the treatment is discontinued in order to avoid the side effects it can cause.
