It is important to remember that most people have some side effects, which tend to be mild. Most only experience some of the following:

  • tiredness
  • feeling unwell
  • problems with food and drink
  • skin reactions
  • flu-like symptoms
  • hair loss
  • changes in the blood

There are ways to help manage the side effects. If you need help and advice on how to treat them, talk to your doctor or the radiotherapy staff. Most side effects last around 10 to 15 days after the treatment is over.

Some people have side effects that last longer or develop them some time after their treatment has concluded. These are called long-term or late effects.

Before undergoing radiotherapy, your clinical oncologist will talk to you about the probable side effects.
